Judi Mayberry and Monica Postma are the owners of Divine K-9. Their goal is to bring a unique experience to dog owners in the Harford County area and to provide the best possible service to their customers.
Judi Mayberry
Judi has always been an animal lover. She became interested in Labrador Retrievers in the 1980's and bred 8 litters and has shown her dogs in conformation and performance events where she has achieved many titles for her dogs, including Rally Obedience and CGC. After 15 years in the corporate world, her pet industry career began in 1996 at Petsmart. Within a year, she became interested in dog training. The training she received there was a good foundation for what was about to follow. She became a member of the Northeastern Maryland Kennel Club and began to help at obedience events. She now judges at club obedience events, performs AKC Canine Good Citizen test and is a past Vice President of the club. Over the years Judi continued to delve deeper into dog training and behavior and attended many seminars from well known trainers and behavorists such as the Volhards, Cesar Milan and Judi Howard, to name a few. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
When a new doggie daycare operation opened in Harford County, Judi left Petsmart to join that operation as Training Manager. Judi wrote the training program which is still in use today. She also filled in as a handler, office manager and was responsible for organizing some of the best loved social events for dogs and their owners that took place. Many have become yearly events that still continue. Judi also developed presentations on dog behavior and problems which she gave at the Pet Expo in Timonium for several years. It was during one of these events that Judi met Carol Komodor, developer of Healing Touch for Animals. Judi has now completed 3 levels of HTA training and it brings an extra element to her training that few trainers understand.
In recent years Judi branched out on her own and formed "It Is A Dog's World" training services. She has taught classes in the Forest Hill area for several years and also does in-home training with difficult dogs. Judi also has a passion for nutrition in a dog's diet and chooses foods and treats that are not only tasty but that are healthy, nutritious and can often provide an alternative to drugs to treating some health issues.
Monica Postma
Monica began her life long passion with dogs literally from birth. Her mother bred and exhibited Labrador Retrievers back when they were a very unknown breed. After college she worked for a veterinary distributor, and began showing in obedience. She progressed to the confirmation ring, apprenticing under a well known all breed handler. Monica has bred and shown champion Pointers since 1984. She has handled multiple breeds to their titles including German Shorthaired Pointers, Irish Setters, Afghan Hounds, Greyhounds, English Springer Spaniels to name a few.
Concerned about the welfare of all dogs, including her beloved mixed breeds, she became a certified veterinary nutritionalist in the early 1990’s. It was during this period that looking to expand her knowledge she attended the Maryland School of Dog Grooming in Silver Spring.
Ten years ago, rekindling her love of riding with the purchase of a small farmette, Monica became aware of the plight of retiring race horses being sent to the slaughter house. Determined to do something to help the situation, she became first an adopter, then a foster farm, for several recognized Thoroughbred retirement groups.
Monica has owned several businesses in the past, and is thrilled to be part of Divine K-9.
Judi and Monica share a passion for dogs, a commitment to their welfare, and the joy of helping their owners.
